Motivational Interviewing Academy for Patient Navigators

Did you enjoy learning about Motivational Interviewing (MI) in our courses but find it challenging to appy MI concepts to your day-to-day interactions with clients? Then this training is for you! The Patient Navigator Training Collaborative (PNTC) is offering an unique opportunity to help patient navigators improve their MI skills. Participants in the “Motivational Interviewing Academy” will practice their skills with a mock patient, followed by one-on-one coaching with our MI expert.

Students will participate in a total of 3 mock patient encounters during spring 2018. You will be able to schedule each 20-minute mock session and follow up coaching call at a time slot that works with your schedule. These sessions will be performed over the phone, so travel is not required. The mock patient scenarios will vary and may not directly reflect the specific disease or focus area you work in, since the focus of the encounter is on improving MI skills.

Spring 2018/ By Phone

Time Commitment

  • Three 20-minute taped sessions with a mock patient between Feb-June 2018

  • Three 30-minute follow-up coaching sessions

By enrolling in this exciting opportunity, you will:

  1. Participate in three encounters with standarized patients so you can practice using MI
  2. Have each session recorded and coded by an expert for various MI skills, to identify areas of strength and improvement
  3. Receive three one-on-one coaching sessions with a professional MI coach, offering personal feedback

What Is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based approach to help people make decisions, from quitting smoking to dietary changes to managing a chronic disease. MI is designed to address a patient’s ambivalence to change. This is a great skill to have in your toolbox to help improve patient outcomes.

Research shows that MI workshops alone usually aren't enough for someone to integrate MI skills, and one-on-one coaching after recorded mock sessions are considered the best training.
